Knowing which video file format is right for you or your project depends on how you plan to use your footage, including where it will be uploaded, edited, or distributed.
MP4, short for MPEG-4 Part 14, is one of the most widely used video formats because it balances high quality with efficient file sizes. MP4 files commonly use the H.264 codec, which compresses video while maintaining strong visual quality. Because of their smaller file sizes and broad compatibility, MP4 is also the preferred video file format for web use and social media platforms.
MOV files, on the other hand, are also known as the QuickTime File Format. MOV is the standard video file within Apple’s ecosystem, since it was developed to be used with their QuickTime multimedia format. MOV files usually use the MPEG-4 codec for video compression, which can hold multiple tracks for audio, video, and text.
While MP4 and MOV used to differ in quality, today they offer about the same level as each other.
In most cases, unless you have an Apple OS, MP4 is generally the best choice for video since it’s universally supported across different devices and platforms. You can learn more about MOV vs MP4 in our dedicated article.
